Not Quite Everything is Black and White

An abstract painting in acrylic, which is a representation of the theory that not everything in life is black and white. An abstract painting in acrylic, which is a representation of the theory that not everything in life is black and white. This painting can be hung in any direction. Painted with acrylic paints for the black, white and grey stripes. I also used metallic pearlescent acrylic paints for the middle horizontal section, which I spread on with a palette knife, known to some as a trowel. The edges are also painted so that the pattern continues on both sides. It is painted on a box framed canvas, so you do not necessarily need to frame it, although the sides are slightly less deep than my usual ones at 3/4 inch. I painted this one when fellow artist Rob Kirbyson bought my other one recently. I liked it so thought I'd repeat the design. Nearly.

Elements in Brown

An abstract acrylic painting done using a palette knife, my fingers and thumb. An abstract acrylic painting done using a palette knife, my fingers and thumb. I painted using the paint straight from the tube onto the canvas or the relevant tool. Patterns that I had in mind when I began this painting were inspired by nature - leaves, twigs, drops of rain. I also had an image of a tribal decoration which kept appearing - I think the repetitive dots and upright lines convey this sort of feeling.

Primary Landscape

An abstract expressionist style of painting by Aitch. An abstract expressionist style of painting by Aitch.A muted green and yellow imaginary landscape fills the background of this painting. The rest of the painting is of nothing in particular, but plays around with the three primary colours in order to create a vibrant and definitive pattern which contrasts with the background. Painted with a combination of acrylics and acrylic inks on box canvas, painted round the edges so no need for additional framing. 20 x 16 inches Date of completion: 17th March 2008

Just a Thought

An abstract acrylic painting - Just A Thought encapsulates exactly what the end result started off as!!

I wanted to create a dreamy, far-away, lost-in-thought type of painting using my favourite colour, red. An abstract acrylic painting - Just A Thought encapsulates exactly what the end result started off as!! I wanted to create a dreamy, far-away, lost-in-thought type of painting using my favourite colour, red. I think you can almost lose yourself whilst looking at this, as you imagine different patterns emerging from the abstract shape created.

Hell Hath No Fury

An abstract acrylic painting with a textured black under-painting applied all over the canvas using a palette knife. An abstract acrylic painting with a textured black under-painting applied all over the canvas using a palette knife. The name of this piece arose as I painted it, the hint of hell appeared on the canvas as I laid the colours down, which in turn led me to think of the phrase "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned".

Scarlet Seduction

A vibrant piece of abstract acrylic art. A vibrant piece of abstract acrylic art. This painting was designed to create impact with the deep scarlet background colour applied thickly with a brush using professional quality acrylic paints. The next stage was masking off certain areas of the red in order to create two elongated triangles in the centre of the painting. I then applied some metallic silver paint in this area using a paletter knife. Once that was dry I used a dropper to paint several splashes of bight red along the silver area. I also made some zig-zag lines in between the silver triangles using a silver acrylic paint from a fine nozzle. The dots of silver at the top and bottom end of the main image were done in the same manner. Finally I added some "bubbles" of red acrylic ink which I then outlined in black acrylic ink using a very fine brush. Some of the red ink which I applied to the painting I left to run down the image, these were also outlined in black ink.

Not Everything is Black and White

An abstract painting in acrylic. An abstract painting in acrylic. It is a representation of the theory that not everything in life is black and white. The black and grey stripes are painted with acrylic, the white stripe was painted with emulsion, then a layer of acrylic was painted over that. The middle section, which has a lovely marble-effect to it, was painted using metallic black and metallic golden lilac mixed together on the canvas with a palette knife. This painting is now owned by Rogue Gene Founder, artist Rob Kirbyson.

Green Opulence 2

Gold Opulence 2 is a very textural abstract acrylic painting. Gold Opulence 2 is a very textural abstract acrylic painting. It is made up of just two colours - Sap Green and Old Gold. The thick consistency of the gold paint helped in creating the textured pattern. The design was created by selecting certain areas of the image in which to apply the different colours. I then simply squeezed the paint straight from the tube onto that particular area and used a palette knife to move the paint around and create the peaks and troughs within each area. Some areas of applied paint were mixed together whilst others were left just as one colour, without cleaning the knife in between working on the different areas. There are obvious variations in the level of the peaks, this was intentional in order to see the effect it would have on the overall painting in terms of the way the light catches it. This is a purely abstract painting, not intended to portray any particular thing - in fact I would be interested to hear what it reminds you of if you like it. I do think that when viewed close-up, some parts of it resemble a brain!! I have used professional quality acrylic paints on an acrylic card, which is surrounded by a bottle green mount and framed in a glazed rustic effect frame.

Terracotta Temptation

An abstract acrylic and ink painting using various techniques resulting in several contrasting parts to the whole painting. An abstract acrylic and ink painting using various techniques resulting in several contrasting parts to the whole painting. A base colour of burnt umber was applied with a palette knife to the whole image. This was then left to dry. A second coat was applied with a mixture of crimson and burnt umber. Before it was dry, I scraped off selected areas to leave a paler segment underneath. I then used a metallic terracotta paint to draw swirls of small dots along the top half of the painting. These were left to dry, then I applied another coat of burnt umber over the top. This gave the impression that the metallic dots were raised within the painting rather than placed on top of it. I added lost more patterns of terracotta dots throughout the painting. Finally I used a dark brown acrylic ink to create a series of bubbles at the lower half of the image. This is an anstract painting which you can interpret any way you like. My mood was quite intense when I painted this, yet I knew exactly what I wanted to achieve regarding the final arrangement within the piece, therefore it is precisely painted, rich in colour and in depth.

Fruity Stones

A semi-abstract acrylic painting, the inspiration behind which was a photograph I took of some random pebbles in our garden. A semi-abstract acrylic painting, the inspiration behind which was a photograph I took of some random pebbles in our garden. I have made the colours much brighter and changed the look of the image dramatically. Each pebble has been outlined with a black metallic paint to highlight it. I wanted a triptych effect but only had one canvas in stock of that size, so improvised by painting two white lines down the painting. Hence the effect of a triptych!! The stones remind me of some exotic pieces of fruit, falling in space. The colours are actually slightly brighter than shown on this photograph.

Storm And A Tree Trunk

Green Opulence 1

A very rich and classy abstract acrylic painting which has been created using a palette knife and two colours only. A very rich and classy abstract acrylic painting which has been created using a palette knife and two colours only. Simple, yet stunning. Sap Green and Old Gold were mixed together on the acrylic card and blended beautifully across with sweeping strokes of the knife. This painting is rather sensual, it gives the feeling of flowing silk or some other such opulent material. The colours are autumnal and rich combined.

Rich Green Landscape

An abstract painting of a rich green landscape. An abstract painting of a rich green landscape. Painted in acrylic, each segment has textured underlayers which have all been overpainted using a lime green mix to bring all the colours together. 3 Wise Men and an Interloper

An abstract expressionist painting in acrylic, using the 3 primary colours with outlines in black. An abstract expressionist painting in acrylic, using the 3 primary colours with outlines in black. Influenced by Picasso's painting "The Three Dancers", I have used the three primary colours in order to represent the 3 different elements in this painting. However, as the painting progressed, I noticed another "figure" appeared in the background, so I decided to use him as well! This is a departure from my usual style of work, but something which I enjoyed doing. Size 12 x 16 inches

Yosemite Burn

An abstract acrylic ink painting inspired by a visit to the Yosemite National Park this summer. An abstract acrylic ink painting inspired by a visit to the Yosemite National Park this summer. In certain areas of the Yosemite National Park, the rangers have controlled burns of the ponderosa pine trees. I thought the burnt out shapes of these trees were ideal for a painting set against an orange sky. I have deliberately let some of the black specks of ink splash against the sky area, in order to create the effect of burnt cinders floating in the sky. Date of completion: October 6th 2007

Metallic paints and acrylic inks were combined with a palette knife to create this multi-layered painting. Date of completetion: 3rd November 2007

Elements in Brown, Too

Abstract acrylic painting in browns. Abstract acrylic painting in browns. There are areas in this painting that are emphasised due to the relief effect of using paint straight from the tube through a fine nozzle - the gold lines across the top and in vertical lines at the lower end of the painting are done in such a mannner. I had an autumnal theme in mind also when I painted this one. The whole set of four is reminiscent of nature and the earth, as well as having some very basic pattern structures which work well with the contrasting areas of colour.
